COMET COLLECTION
« on: February 25, 2010, 07:31:23 am »
Hijacking the first post for an introduction to comet finding!

In order to see if your comet has a name or number, you need to find the date of your video.  To find this you can look at the page source of your favorites, there you will see a long string with a part that looks like this: 20090601_hi1a.flv, that's the date of your video, year month day, and whether you're looking at Ahead or Behind.

You can find a list of all comets that have been detected here and also here, we are looking at HI1A and HI1B in Spot and What's That.  If your comet is from Track it Back, you're looking at COR2A and COR2B.

Keep in mind that What's That videos are 7 days long, and Spot videos are 16 days long, and the date you've just found is for when the video starts.  So the date on the list for your comet will be after the date on the video.

That said, it's certainly not necessary to track down the identity of every comet you find, it's just a fun thing to do.  On to the comets!

I found a nice comet in http://solarstormwatch.com/favourites/156 from time 0.20 to 23.10
and a smaller one in http://solarstormwatch.com/favourites/144 from time 15.80 to 20.70

Anyone else have any favorites?

On day two, got my first comet and it's a good one!  You can see it appear out of nowhere around 4.30 heading into the sun.  I believe it impacted the sun, as a few seconds later at 8.90 the sun has a temper tantrum coming from the same area the comet would have hit.

Wow! I had to watch that three times before I saw the comet. I wonder if there's a badge for having very sharp eyesight?

Yeah, my first comet! And it it's a really big one. No need to tell you in which corner of the image to look for it :-)

It might be Comet Encke - see http://www.ast.cam.ac.uk/~jds/preds07.htm
